Mon, 07 Dec, 2015 12:08:54 AM FTimes – STT Report, Dec 7 File Photo – Lehtikuva. The National Police Board is planning to trim down the police force by almost 900 men by the year 2020, reported Kaleva, a Finnish language daily.
Scarcity of budget appropriations has been cited as the reason behind the saving plan.
The police appropriations, according to Kaleva, is set to be cut down by around euro 40 million in the years 2017 to 2019 as per the preliminary draft budget. In case the security police (Supo) are taken into account, the figure rises to euro 60 million.
“When it comes to the personnel I have no option. I am obliged to adjust to the framework set by Ministry of Finance,” said the National Police Commissioner Seppo Kolehmainen as quoted by Kaleva.
According to the police chief’s assessment, the savings will undermine police emergency work and the rate of solving crimes, extend the period of investigations as well as reduce the amount of benefits gained by the state through investigation of crimes.
