The majority of retailers interviewed by national broadcaster Yle believe that liberalising shops’ opening hours is going to increase the operating costs of the shops.

Nearly 72 percent of the respondents believe that expenditure will rise as a result of the changes to the shops' opening hours.

The new opening hours will entitle employees to a variety of allowances provided under collective bargaining agreements. However, only one if five respondents expect the rise of level of expenditure will affect consumer prices.

Retailers have mostly welcomed the liberalisation of shops' opening hours, even though there has been criticism levelled, for examples, on increase in organisation disorderliness and the possibility of small shops to operate in the new environment.

Approximately 44 percent of the retailers said they would extend the working hours, while a third of the respondents said they will not extend the shops' opening hours.
