The Internet of Things (IoT) is already in many places, although many ordinary customers are not always aware of it.

“It is partly invisible. Very many everyday things that are purchased from stores are connected to the Internet,” said IT professor Martti Mäntylä of the Aalto University.

Mäntylä believes that the phenomenon of IoT will strike within the next decade. Now it is already expected to appear more widely among consumer products.

Many homes already have smart TVs, automatic meter readings, or network-controlled lighting systems.

Computer science professor Sasu Tarkoma of the University of Helsinki said that the phenomenon is only in its embryonic stage.

“The technology behind IoT has been in development for decades. We're talking about a major technological upheaval,” said the professor.
