Unemployment is scaring more and more senior staff, found a survey commissioned by the Finnish language daily Helsingin Sanomat.

One-third of the respondents to the poll from upper management are now afraid of being laid off in the next few years, while one year ago, only 30 per cent responded that they feared losing their jobs.

About a third of white-collar workers lower on the totem pole also fear losing their jobs, but this number has dropped by ten percentage points since last year.

In total, the proportion of employees who fear losing their jobs dropped from a third to a quarter.

Half of all respondents believe they are safe from layoffs. One in four, however, believes that the economic situation is deteriorating.

A total of 1,100 persons responded to the TNS Gallup poll in December. The margin of error is about three percentage points.
