An increasing number of viable companies are forced to stop operations because of lack of successors.

According to the Federation of Finnish Enterprises ownership change barometer, 78,000 Finnish enterprises in the near future need new owners due to retirement of the current ones.

The most problematic situation involves those companies in which a successor is not found within the entrepreneur’s own family, said Federation of Finnish Enterprises Deputy Managing Director Anssi Kujala.

Only 11 per cent of the sales of future companies have buyers known to them in advance.

On the other hand, 39 per cent of old entrepreneurs estimate that they will sell their companies to an external party at the stage when they decide to give up entrepreneurship.

Less than a quarter of the entrepreneurs believe that a successor will be found within the family.

Slightly over a quarter of the entrepreneurs believe that the companies will completely shut operations due to retirements.

The Federation of Finnish Enterprises hopes that buying of companies already in operation should increase further as an alternative to establishing new ones.
