Telecommunications giant Ericsson and Swedish operator Telia Sonera are aiming for 5G wireless networks to cover the Stockholm region by 2018, local media reported on Friday.

Testing and development is currently underway with the aim of supplying residents of Stockholm and the Estonian capital Tallinn with the new generation of technology, public broadcaster Swedish Television reported.

"Our ambition is to be at the cutting edge -- at all times -- offering our customers and society at large all the possibilities that technology brings," Telia Sonera CEO Johan Dennelind said in a statement.

"5G will create completely new innovations, ecosystems and great services to our customers," he added.

The technology might be applied in the health care sector to enable "real time surveillance of patients and remote treatment," the companies said in a press release.

Vehicles might also use the 5G network to send transmit critical information to each other, they said, as the industry moves towards assisted driving.

Ericsson has predicted that the now fledgling 5G market will cover 150 million subscriptions by the end of 2021.

Telia Sonera is active in the Nordic and Baltic regions as well as in several emerging markets in Eurasia. Founded in 1876, Ericsson employs some 116,000 people across the world.
