Thu, 28 Jan, 2016 12:02:33 AM FTimes – STT Report, Jan 28 File Photo – Lehtikuva. Meyer Turku shipyard is planning to lay off workers in steel production next summer, reported a Finnish language daily Turun Sanomat.
The shipyard began co-determination talks on Monday with the negotiations covering 100 employees.
The shipyard's chief steward Jari Aalto told Turun Sanomat that he was disap-pointed at the notification of the negotiation which according to him seems to take place more frequently without the regard of shipyard's own employees despite the volume of work in store.
According to Meyer Turku, the layoffs in the steel production will take place in the summer since the steel work on Mein Schiff 6 and the vessel ordered by Tallink are to be completed by that time.
The start of the construction of the subsequent vessel in the line in production Mein Schiff 7 cannot be brought forward due to a number of changes, said Tapani Pulli, the Deputy Yard Director at Meyer Turku.
Tallink has the option of ordering another vessel whose construction is slated for summer.
If Tallink does not go ahead with the order in the summer, the next possibility will materialise only after the beginning of 2020.
