The Confederation of Finnish Industries (EK) wants its member companies to hire 110,000 young people for summer jobs this year.

The summer goal announced at the Responsible Summer Job campaign start-up seminar in Helsinki is 10,000 more than last year.

According to EK’s executive director Riikka Heikinheimo, young people bring new energy and fresh skills to the workplace.

“The whole of the working community will benefit from this summer workers become skilled professionals in a few years, and employers have access to these new professionals in advance through summer employment,” Heikinheimo said in a statement.

About 12 percent of EK member companies estimate a higher number of jobs this summer than in previous years. The construction and forestry industries, in particular, will have more open positions.

Most of the young people are employed in sales, technological industries, and real estate service companies.

EK's objective for this year's number of summer jobs is based on a survey done at the end of last summer, which was answered by 2800 member companies.
