The Helsinki District Court on Monday began hearing allegations made against Esa Laiho who is charged with doctor impersonation, among other things.

He is suspected of attempting to over-invoice the City of Helsinki. The problems became apparent that the city had already paid compensation to Laiho’s company, because the city had stopped payment to the doctor, citing lack of clarity.

“The City of Helsinki had to pay last year 147,000 euros to Laiho’s company for unpaid invoices,” Laiho’s lawyer Kari Uoti told the news agency STT.

According to Uoti, the court’s decision concerns medical services for the year 2011, the same period that the charges concern.

In court on Monday, according to the indictment, Laiho misled the City of Helsinki into overpaying about 3,700 euros to his company and tried to charge the same company about 4,800.

According to Laiho, the charges of over-invoicing are not valid. He claims that, for example, travel invoices are not able to describe the amount of work done, since the doctor accumulates per week about 5-6 hours of work outside the hospital, for example, over the phone.

He claims that the prosecutor’s statement that this work should only be about an hour or so is incorrect. He himself denies falsifying any information and denies all charges.
