The 19-country euro area's seasonally-adjusted unemployment rate was 10.3 percent in January, down from 10.4 percent in December last year and from 11.3 percent a year ago, Eurostat, the statistical office of the European Union (EU) said on Tuesday.
 
The statistics agency said this was the lowest recorded rate in the euro area since August 2011.
 
In the wider 28-nation bloc, the EU, unemployment rate was 8.9 percent in January, down from 9.0 percent in December 2015, and from 9.8 percent in the same month last year. This was the lowest rate recorded in the EU since May 2009.
 
Among the member states, the lowest unemployment rates in January were recorded in Germany at 4.3 percent and the Czech Republic, 4.5 percent. The highest unemployment rates were observed in Greece and Spain, both above 20 percent.
