Use of robotics, in industry, for example, is reducing some jobs in Finland, said Transport and Communication Manager Anne Berner (Keskusta).

Berner, however, believes that robots can also create new jobs.

“Historically, this has always been a major change for industry. Currently, robots are being used extensively not only in manufacturing but also in services, for example, in the health and pharmaceutical sector. Robotics can facilitate drug delivery, for example, to the elderly and seriously ill,” Berner said.

On the other hand, Professor Ville Kyrki believes that robots could increase jobs, for example, by creating room in the automotive industry, but only when it is highly automated.

“The Uusikaupunki car factory recently announced its acquisition of 250 new robots,” Kyrki said.

Kyrki leads the Smart Robotics research group at Aalto University, whose research concerns robots and the future of welfare services. The group’s vision is that in 10 years from now, robots will already be helping service, for example, the elderly.

Robotics is one element of the government’s key digital projects. Berner is the minister responsible for the project. The government believes that robots can be used to elevate Finnish industry, the service sector and the efficiency and competitiveness of information work.
