FTimes- STT Report, Mar 25

The District Court of Helsinki on Thursday fined Antti Rinne, leader of the main opposition Suomen Sosialidemokraattinen Puolue (Social Democratic Party of Finland), for his long- disputed role in a series of labour strikes in the forestry sector in 2011.

Rinne was handed a 20-days fine equivalent to 1,240 euros for violation of law in mediation of the labour dispute.

Rinne was the chairman of Trade Union Pro when the strikes were initiated in the spring of 2011without the two-week prior notice to the national conciliators and the forestry industry as required by the law.

Rinne said the strikes were launched because the companies wanted the employees to train other workers to replace them.

The forestry companies demanded about 700,000 euros compensation from Rinne and the Trade Union Pro, which, however, was denied by the court.

Rinne will deliberate during the Easter holiday whether to abide by the court’s verdict or appeal the decision, he told news agency STT.

The SDP leader, however, considers the interpretation of law important in respect to the dismissal of compensation claim, which otherwise would have significantly thwarted the right to strike.

“I take it humbly that the fine is censured,” Rinne said.
