The seventh Arctic Business Forum begins in Rovaniemi on Wednesday focusing on the latest global and local developments affecting the business possibilities in the Arctic.

Minister for Foreign Trade and Development Lenita Toivakka, US Ambassador to Finland Charles C. Adams Jr, Deputy Head of Cabinet Kristian Hedberg of the Cabinet of Commissioner Elżbieta Bieńkowska of European Commission, Regional Council of Lapland County Governor Mika Riipi, and Lapland Chamber of Commerce Chairman Juha Mäkimattila will address the inaugural plenary of the forum at the Korundi House of Culture.

The forum this year will assess the status and potentials of investment projects and economic cooperation in the Arctic. The conference will renew the visions of Arctic development with specific attention being paid to the European High North regions. New technologies and new solutions will also be sought for the region’s prosperity.

One of the sessions of this year’s forum will look into China’s Arctic plans and objectives including the Kaidi Sunshine New Energy Group’s planned biodiesel refinery project in Kemi. Kaidi Finland Oy CEO Pekka Koponen will present the plan and the opportunities it will bring for the local companies. Counsellor Zhang Binfrom the Chinese Embassy in Finland will present China’s aspirations in the North.

As is the tradition, the Arctic Business Forum Yearbook 2016 will be launched on the first day of the conference. The yearbook presents an updated assessment of the investment potential of the region, evaluates changes in the operating environment, business needs and barriers to trade.

In addition, the yearbook will offer an estimation of the investments being made in Northern Norway, Northern Sweden, Murmansk and Arkhangelsk regions of Russia as well as in Lapland, Northern Ostrobothnia and Kainuu region of Finland.

The session topics of this year’s forum include Arctic trends and investments, Arctic tourism, Arctic industry and sustainability, and Arctic nature products. For the first time, an analysis of investment- and business-¬related risks will also be discussed.
