Arturs Dutka, a master brewer from Latvia, who has moved to Rovaniemi together with an accomplished brewing team, is in the process of setting up a brewery at Rovaniemi Eteläkeskus.

The new company, Lapin Panimo Oy (Lapland Brewery Ltd) said the funding is ready and the equipment required has already been ordered from abroad.

Lapin Panimo expects the first batch of its production will turn out as soon as this autumn.

Standing in the empty hall of a building in Teollisuustie, the city’s industrial herb, Dutka seems both anxious and happy. He is waiting for a consignment of equipment to arrive from Austria. “Will the lorry arrive by the midsummer,” he wonders in a clear Finnish.

Dutka’s dream brewery is being constructed with support from Ahma insinöörit Oy. Together with Ahma insinöörit, Lapin Panimo has acquired the brewery premises and equipment at a cost of one million euros.

The share capital was collected in three days after Dutka had tabled his proposal before Antti Kuivalainen, owner of Ahma insinöörit, in last autumn.

“I believe Rovaniemi needs its own brand of beer. It is needed by both the locals and the tourists,” Dutka told Finnish language newspaper Lapin Kansa.

Kuivalainen said the first batch of production expected in autumn will be a type of amber lager, an amber-coloured translucent fermented beer.

Dutka, a master brewer, said the secret of beer is yeast. The smell and taste of the beer originate from yeast and there are different types of yeast available in Europe.

Malt will be acquired from Finland. But, there is a scarcity of hops. However, Dutka believes the supply is adequate.

The plan is to produce three basic types of beer and a seasonal product for holidays.

The production of one thousand litres at one go is considered sufficient, since the damage would not be too large in case of an unforeseen situation.

Dutka learnt the art of brewing from the VLB Berlin, the German industrial brewing research and training institution founded in 1883.

Chemical engineer Heidi Mikkonen from Rovaniemi is also a part of the Lapin Panimo staff set-up. Mikkonen previously worked at Sinebrychoff quality control. Marketing of drinks is also a territory familiar to her.

Initially, the annual production capacity of the brewery will be 150,000 litres. With the expansion of production facilities, the capacity could rise to 600,000 litres.

The goal, however, is not to produce as much beer as possible, but to produce good beer.
