The warmer than usual weather in the past week has sped up the growth of potatoes in the domestic fields.

“Calm sunny weather is perfect for potatoes, because under the cover, heat can rise,” said crop production expert Antti Lavonen of the Central Union of Agricultural Producers and Forest Owners (MTK).

Spring weather in Finland, however, is so unpredictable that the exact readiness date of the first domestic potatoes cannot yet be predicted.

Lavonen said a couple of weeks from now, they’ll know more.

“Last year, the first potatoes were planted as early as the end of February, earlier than ever, but spring was not favourable for an early potato harvest,” said the expert.

Early potatoes are by Finnish standards, stunted, and the peel is easily removable.

“The authorities determine at what point early potatoes are considered regular potatoes,” Lavonen said.

Early potatoes are also imported from Sweden, but a new crop of potatoes brought from the Mediterranean countries does not meet the Finnish standard for early potatoes.

According to Lavonen, they are a different product.
