The Customs on Friday started to auction 128 cars left behind or handed over to the State by asylum seekers at the Salla border crossing point last winter.

The auction was held at the premises of Salla municipality hall.

Huugo Jaakkonen a native of Salla, for instance, bought his first car a classic Lada for 60 euros during the Friday's auction.

Pauli Saastamoinen and his son Einari Keitele bought a four-lamp Lada for 300 euros.

“It will be the 12-year-old boy's first car, a common hobby car,” Saastamoinen said.

The Customs had earlier said that there were Ladas, Volgas and vehicles of other brands waiting for new owners at the auction.

The vehicles will also be on display on Saturday at noon.

“The cars must be paid for in cash or with a cheque verified by a bank, unless otherwise stated at the auction. Value added tax of 24 per cent will be added to the auction price,” said senior customs officer Kari Hannu of Tornio Customs.

According to Hannu, the vehicles will be sold in their current condition and they cannot be exchanged or returned. Customs is not responsible for the correctness of the odometer readings of the vehicles, their reported year of manufacture or any other such information.
