Sales in total trade went up by 4.0 per cent year-on-year in May 2016, according to Statistics Finland’s data.
 
Among the main sectors of trade, sales increased most in motor vehicle trade by a total of 16.7 per cent.
 
Sales in retail trade grew by 1.8 per cent in May from one year ago.
 
Sales of daily consumer goods grew by 2.1 per cent and sales in department stores by 2.0 per cent the statistics show.
 
Sales in wholesale trade grew by 2.4 per cent from the previous year.
 
The sales volume in motor vehicle trade went up by 15.9 per cent from May 2015.
 
The growth was affected by increased sales of new motor vehicles.
 
The data indicate that the number of first registrations of motor vehicles was also 13.9 per cent higher in May than in May 2015.
 
In retail trade, the sales volume increased by 3.0 per cent in May and in wholesale trade by 5.5 per cent from one year earlier.
 
Thus, the sales volume increased in total trade by 6.1 per cent in May.
 
In the January to May period, the wholesale trade sales decreased by 1.7 per cent compared with the corresponding period of the previous year.
 
In contrast, the retail trade sales went up by 0.5 per cent and motor vehicle trade sales by 10.5 per cent over the corresponding period.
 
In total trade, sales were up by 0.6 per cent in January to May on the respective period of the year before as per the statistics.
