The mining company Talvivaara will continue with nickel and zinc production.

The mine is trying to operate at full capacity, while, at the same time, a political decision to close down the mine is looming around the corners.

The government has given Terrafame, the company which will run the mine until the end of this year. Terrafame owns the fully state-owned Terrafame Group.

During a presentation of the production figures on Wednesday, Terrafame said the operations started as planned.

The company’s operating profit in January-June was 98 million euros, which was just under 13 million euros more than estimated in the budget.

According to Terrafame, the result was boosted by the improved sale of zinc and more efficient use of chemicals in metals recovery.

“We are in the mine’s ramp-up phase. Every quarter, the production volumes are growing,” Terrafame CEO Joni Lukkaroinen said.

The company produced 1,754 tonnes of zinc and 4,070 tonnes of nickel in April-June. It would be possible for the mine to reach the full-capacity operation at the end of next year, according to Lukkaroinen.
