Mon, 01 Aug, 2016 01:21:19 AM Kuusiselkä wind turbines FTimes Report, Aug 1 FTimes File Photo. The seven wind turbines planned to be installed in the Kuusiselkä landfill area in Rovaniemi are exempted from the need for an environmental impact review.
The Centre for Economic Development, Transport and the Environment (ELY) of Lapland has decided that the project planning can continue without an environmental impact assessment, ELY said.
Four of the wind turbines are to be placed at the corners of the landfill area. The remaining three are to be set up by the landfill’s entryway at its north.
The maximum height of wind turbines will be 240 metres and a single turbine can produce 3 to 3.5 megawatts of electricity.
According to ELY, the electricity transmission does not require building a 110kV power line. A 20kV electric wire will run from the landfill access road to the side of the main road either suspended or as an underground cable and join the Valajaskoski-Permantokoski power line.
ELY in their decision said the project will cause no major or significantly harmful change in the landscape. The wind turbines will be visible from downtown Rovaniemi, Kivitaipale village and some private lots.
According to ELY’s estimates there will be no residence within the reach of the turbines’ noise.
The Kuusiselkä landfill is meant to make use of other types of energy as well.
Half of the landfill will be closed this year. ELY, however, estimates that it will stay in operation for a few more years. Landfill gas will be forming for an estimated 15-20 years after closure of the landfill.
ELY sees that the environmentally ratified biogas production and minor solar energy production on the facilities along with the wind turbine project will not have a combined effect that would cause significant harm to the environment.
The regional state administrative agency of Northern Finland has not granted an exception permit for dumping waste with organic material in the Kuusiselkä landfill. More News
