Tue, 23 Aug, 2016 12:05:53 AM FTimes – STT Report, Aug 23 Lingonberry. File Photo Lehtikuva. Lingonberry harvest this year is estimated to be weaker than that in the recent years, according to Natural Resources Centre Senior Researcher Rainer Peltola.
“Several observations point to the degree of lingonberry flower pollination which has fallen to less than 50 per cent, although it might be as good as about 80 per cent,” said Peltola.
According to Peltola, a low pollination means that pollinating insects have not been active. The researcher believes the reason for this is probably the heavy rain falls in June.
Geographically, the type of forest and soil that favour lingonberries are in western Finland and Ostrobothnia. The researcher said Ostrobothnia is expecting a mediocre harvest.
The first observations on lingonberry flowering were made at the beginning of June in southern Finland. In the central part of Finland lingonberry flowering was seen in the second week of June and further north several weeks later.
