The food grain harvest this year affected by hot and dry early summer, individual nights of frost and heavy rainfall after mid-June is estimated to be lower than the harvest of the previous year.

According to the Natural Resources Institute-Luke, a reasonable grain harvest of about 3.6 billion kilogrammes could be achieved this year, if most of the crops can be harvested in dry weather.

Other crops such as rapeseed, peas and brad beans are expected to yield a greater harvest than last year.

“The grains harvest will probably be the smallest in five years,” said Luke researcher Anneli Partala.

The harvest estimate of Luke’s crop production statistics is based on local estimates supplied by experts at ProAgria Rural Advisory Centre.

According to the estimation, the wheat harvest will be about 15 percent lower than last year.

The oats harvest, however, is expected to be ten percent higher than last year totaling 1.1 billion kilogrammes.
