Foreign Trade and Development Minister Kai Mykkänen on Sunday said there have been no new developments between the European Union and the United States regarding the Free Trade Agreement.

Mykkänen’s remarks followed a statement made by German Economic Affairs Minister Sigmar Gabriel, who on Sunday told the US news agency Associated Press (AP) that the negotiations have failed, even if no one wants to admit it yet.

“There is nothing new, as Gabriel has long taken a critical stance on the negotiations. In spite of that, for example, Chancellor [Angela] Merkel has had a different policy,” Mykkänen told the news agency STT.

Mykkänen himself believes the emergence of an agreement is a possibility.

In his opinion, an emergence of the agreement would be important for Finnish employment and, for example, the shipbuilding industry.

“But when the might of the world’s two largest traders is engaged, difficulty is a factor,” added Mykkänen.
