Finance Minister Petteri Orpo on Saturday said he does not consider the labour market organisations’ showdown a major issue.

Talking to the national broadcaster Yle in its Ykkösaamu (morning breakfast programme), Orpo called for the unions to focus on the difficult situation created by unemployed.

Earlier, the Finnish language daily Helsingin Sanomat reported on Saturday that Akava, a trade union of the highly skilled employees, intends to withdraw from labour market cooperation in the European Union.

Finunions, a joint lobby office of the Central Organisation of Finnish Trade Unions (SAK), the Finnish Confederation of Salaried Employees (STTK), and Akava has been operating in Brussels since 1991.

Akava decided to end the lobbying cooperation on Wednesday. Akava on Wednesday also discussed the ending of funding for PT (Palkansaajien tutkimuslaitos, the Labour Institute for Economic Research).

The president of Akava, Sture Fjäder did not confirm the reported intention of the trade union in an interview with the newspaper.

“I intend to bark to all those in the board who leaked [the information],” Fjäder told the Helsingin Sanomat.

Besides dissatisfaction with the operations of Finunion and PT, bickering within the unions has also been attributed behind Akava’s decision.
