Visiting Polish Vice Prime Minister and Finance Minister Mateusz Morawiecki proposed Monday to further promote economic and trade cooperation between his country and Belarus.

He is here to attend the 20th Belarus-Poland economic forum and the 4th meeting of the joint commission of economic cooperation between the two countries, whose bilateral trade totaled 2 billion U.S. dollars in 2015.

Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko called to work out ways to bring the two sides closer so as to overcome their differences in cooperation.

Lukashenko also said that Belarus and Poland are both experiencing difficulties due in part to an unfavorable environment, highlighting Western embargoes against Russia and growth setbacks in Ukraine.

Morawiecki said that it is one of the Polish government's priorities to increase cooperation with Belarus, and that Poland is ready to seek solutions to thorny issues.

Meanwhile, he suggested that since the two countries both serve as gateways between the East and the West, they should together benefit from their geographic advantage, including within the framework of China's Belt and Road Initiative.
