Hundreds of thousands of Finns agonise daily over their finances, as they do not have enough money even for essentials, according to a new report published by the National Institute of Health and Welfare (THL).
The report said about 8 per cent of the Finns, or about 440,000 people, do not have enough income.
In other words, their income falls below the so-called “minimum budget.”
About 12 per cent of Finns, or 660,000 people, live in relative poverty. Their income falls below the EU poverty threshold. The minimum budget threshold marks those who fall into the deepest poverty.
“Now is the first time that we have updated projections for both relative and deep poverty. Poverty is a multidimensional phenomenon, and socio-political decision-making should be based on more than one metre of tracking poverty,” said THL Research Professor Pasi Moisio.
Both indicators show that the number of poor is forecast to remain the same this year as in 2014.
