FTimes-STT Report, March 20

The citizens' initiative on Tuesday started campaigning to collect signatures of the people in favour of the proposal to bring changes in the marriage act through recognizing same sex marriage.

The initiators, however, collected already 50,000 signatures on the first day of the campaigning in favour of the right of every citizen to marry anyone regardless of gender.

“ Bringing a change in the Marriage Act is absolutely a vital decision should be taken now ……“, the Conservative Party Member of Parliament,  Lasse Männistö said.

The bill was placed  before the parliamentary committee last month but it was rejected in a small margin of votes.

Now the citizen moves to create public support could make the bill considerable to the parliament.

- The strength of the democratic way to bring the constitutional change  has been seen in a single day, “ Männistö estimated.

The citizen campaigning backed by Tahdon2013 expressed its satisfaction over the outcome of the public response and the Chairman of the campaign,  Senni Moilanen thanked the people.

Although the number of adequate signatures could bring the issue to the parliament, the organizers vowed to continue it for more time to wage political support to this effect.

Moilanen  said that they wanted to collect names as much as possible.

Another organizer, Aija Salo said that they hoped to collect  a hundred thousand of names as number of opinion polls already showed that majority of the Finnish, almost 60 percent of the total people supported the move to bring change in the marriage law.

Salo also hoped that the Parliament should show respects to the the citizens' initiatives.

The legal affairs committee of the parliament at the end of last month did not place the bill to the House due to lack of majority support and opted to hold discussion and taking public opinion for the bill.

The same sex marriage is recognized in all the Nordic countries excepting Finland.
