Prime Minister Jyrki Katainen on Saturday held the present difficult economic situation responsible for the waning popularity of his National Coalition Party (Kokoomus).

To a query about the findings of a recent opinion poll on the popularity of political parties during the Yle TV1 breakfast show, the prime minister said the situation was spawned by the country’s weak financial condition.

He also said that the government had to take various measures to face the financial challenges that were difficult for the masses to understand, which might be a reason for the declining popularity of the Kokoomus.

The popularity of his party has slid from the top to second position, with the Centre Party (Keskusta) hitting the peak.

Katainen admitted his fault in this regard, saying that his heavy workload had deterred him from propagating his own views to mobilise public support.

‘Public sentiment is the heart of politics. It grows on feedback and interactions,’ said the PM.

In reply to another query on the decision of the Korean parent company STX to sell Turku and Rauma shipyards, he said it could be an opportunity for making things better.

According to Katainen, the weak financial state of STX has made the future of the shipyards uncertain, but it can be overcome by changing the ownership.

The premier said finding a Finnish owner for the shipyard was difficult but not impossible.

He suggested that the state could be involved in a new ownership arrangement, but the state would not be the sole or primary owner of the shipyards.
