Farmers are expecting a bumper harvest of strawberries this year as winter frostbite and other disasters harmed the growth of the fruit very little.

The growth of strawberries was very good this year as the crop withstood the winter without frostbites and there was no other significant disaster, remarked the Fruit and Berries Farming Union.

The union, however, predicted that the harvest might be delayed in some parts of the country.

‘The strawberries have been under a thick layer snow for a long time,’ FBFU Farming Adviser Tuija Tanska said, adding that if the skiing season is successful, it is always good for strawberries.

Strawberries have already started to grow in its main farming area of Suonenjoki while in Savo the growth is starting at the normal time, said Tanska.

Strawberry harvest in last year was good too. ‘There was rainfall in summer, but the amount of production was quite good,’ said Suonenjoki Berries Farming Union Executive Director Ilkka Voutilainen.

Strawberry is also cultivated in Häme and Norh Karjala.
