The country on Sunday observed National Flag Day commemorating those brave sons of the soil who had sacrificed their lives in the national wars.

About 50 deceased repatriated heroes were laid to eternal rest on this year’s Flag Day.

The day’s programme began in the morning with President Sauli Niinistö placing wreaths at the Hietaniemi cemetery in the capital.

The funerals of 42 deceased heroes, including only five identified ones, took place in Lappeenranta.

One of the deceased soldiers, Eemil Seppänen from Lappeenrata, was buried while the rest were interred in a mass grave.

The funerals of other identified martyrs were held at their local graveyards in Pertunmaa, Laihia and Lieksa.

Of the remaining repatriated deceased soldiers, the identified bodies were handed over to their relatives before their burial in mass graves in Lappeenranta, Joensuu and Kajaani.

The government since 1990s has brought the remains of more than 1,100 Finnish soldiers and about one-third of them were identified through DNA tests.

The remains of the martyred soldiers are being recovered from the war places and many of them were found in the Finland-Russia border areas.

Finland has been observing National Flag Day since 1977 on the third Sunday of May every year.

Although the occasion commemorates the soldiers martyred in the war for the country, the Finnish soldiers killed in peacekeeping missions were also included on the occasion.

Finland achieved independence through the war in 1917. The country also faced wars in 1939 to 1940, in 1941 to 1944, and in Lapland in 1944 to 1945.
