The paint factory Teknos, which released huge toxic chemical substance in the river Mätäjoki in Helsinki, might be charged for serious environmental pollution.

The police on Thursday started formal investigation under the environment crime as they sensed that all the fishes of rivers were killed during the incident of release of the toxic chemical.

The paint factory on May 20 released the toxic substance to the river through a storm drain for two hours resulting death of fishes and other livings in the river.

Initially police thought that the incident might have occurred due to negligence, not intentionally.

But the Helsinki police later decided to investigate the case with the officials of Environment department under environmental crime to measure the impact of the release of toxic substance.

The Helsinki police’s Investigation Director, Sampsa Marttila said that the authority initially suspected the incident as negligence but the toxic substance might have killed all the fishes of the water during the release.

The director said that they already interrogated some people involved and the authority would now ask the factory for the amount of the substance released.

The company authority and the law enforcing agency initially termed the spilling of toxic chemical as human error and the factory officials estimated that 500 to 1000 litters of toxic substance were released through the drainage, local media reported.
