Incidents of pick-pocketing have increased significantly in Helsinki during the recent period.
Police recorded a total of 3,380 incidents of pick-pocketing in the capital this year and the number is 240 higher than the stipulated period of the previous year, police sources said.
Police said that a number of professional thieves come to Finland from East Europe, which is the reason behind the increase of pick-pocketing in the country.
‘They move very fast from one province to another. Today they are in Helsinki, tomorrow in Turku and then in Stockholm,’ Detective Superintendent of Helsinki police Juha Laaksonen said on Tuesday.
Thieves are interested especially in mobile phones, cash money and debit cards. Thieving occurs especially in trams and restaurants.
This year’s trick is to confuse the victim with a paper, says Laaksonen.
