Country’s population reached to 5,434,357 at the end of May with an increase of 7,700 persons since the beginning of the year 2013, according to the Statistics Finland.
 
The preliminary data of the Statistics Finland released last week said that the main reason for the population increase was migration from abroad.
 
Over the January to May period, Finland's population increased by 7,700 persons, which is, however, 400 persons less than that in the corresponding period of the previous year.
 
The number of immigrants was 6,100 higher than that of emigrants. Natural population growth, or excess of births to deaths, was 1,600 persons.
 
According to the preliminary statistics for the January to May period, 10,800 persons immigrated to Finland from abroad and 4,700 persons emigrated from Finland.
 
The number of immigrants and also the number of emigrants was 50 higher than in the corresponding period of the previous year. In all, 2,800 of the immigrants and 3,300 of the emigrants were Finnish citizens.
 
During the January to May period 24,150 children were born, which is 450 children less than in the corresponding period of 2012. The number of deaths was 22,550, which is 50 lower than a year earlier.
