Photo AFP / Lehtikuva Ruling National Coalition Party leaders have trashed a media report that speculated the Prime Minister Jyrki Katainen might quit the position of the government and the party as well.
They termed the report as rumors after a Finnish language newspaper, Suomen Kuvalehti, on Friday said that the prime minister is supposed to place a proposal before this autumn to quit from his present positions as the prime minister and the party chief.
Katainen might be preparing for the position of a commissioner of the European Union after the EU parliamentary elections scheduled for next year, the paper reported quoting an unnamed source.
The Prime Minister Office, however, straightway rejected any possibility of the prime minister’s resignation.
The senior leaders of Kokoomus also expressed their surprise over the news report terming the news a baseless one. It has no connection with the reality, they added.
Katainen, however, did not make any comment since he is now on vacation.
Talking to STT, Kokoomus secretary Taru Tujunen said that he did not see the news. Tujunen, who is also on vacation did not make any comment before going through the report.
Another Vice President Anne-Mari Virolainen wondered after hearing the news and said that that she did not hear any information in this regard before.
“There are always some rumors that are not always true,” said Virolainen, adding that she would discuss the matter with the Prime Minister before making any comment.
Another Vice President Janne Sankelo said that the news surprised him as the issue was never discussed in party forum.
