Interior Minister Päivi Räsänen on Thursday urged societies across Europe to fight the looming threats of cyber crimes, an official release said.

The minister made the call at an informal meeting of the European ministers for justice and home affairs in Lithuania, where the dignitaries discussed cooperation among various actors involved in cyber security with a view to strengthening the cooperation.

The idea behind the discussion was to promote the implementation of the Cyber-security Strategy of the European Union, said the release.

The minister said that the EU must actively promote the implementation of the Budapest Convention on Cybercrime. ‘The Convention provides a good basis both for national legislation on cybercrime and for international cooperation,’ she added.

Combating cybercrime should be made one of the EU priorities, Räsänen said adding “Well-functioning cooperation and exchange of information between law enforcement authorities and the private sector is of great importance when maintaining up-to-date situational awareness.”

Combating cyber threats requires the attention of all actors in society.
