A court on Friday sentenced a man to nine-and-a-half years imprisonment on charge of firing gunshots at two police personnel at Konala area in Helsinki last year.

Helsinki district court awarded the punishment to Tomi Kalevi Leino, 42, as charges of attempt to murder and drug brought against him were proved beyond doubt, court sources said.

Leino fired gunshots at police with a Luger Tomgun in December, 2012 when one of the policemen sustained serious bullet wounds in his hand while another policeman managed to escape taking shelter behind a wall just half a meter away.

The court observed that one policeman might have been dead if he had failed to take shelter behind the wall during the firing.

The accused, however, denied the charge of attempt to murder but admitted the incident of firing gunshots at police.

The court also ordered the convicted to pay EUR 7,000 compensation to the police for their sufferings.

According to psychiatric assessment, the man committed the incident with the motive of crimes.
