The government named Petteri Tiippana as the new Director General of the Radiation and Nuclear Safety Authority (STUK), according to a press release.
 
The post is for a fixed term of three years.
 
The purpose of the Radiation and Nuclear Safety Authority, which is subordinate to the Ministry of Social Affairs and Health, is to protect people, society, the environment, and future generations from the harmful effects of radiation.
 
The Director General heads the activities of the Radiation and Nuclear Safety Authority, and is responsible for the cost-effective, efficient, and successful operation of the Authority.
 
In the coming three years, the work of the Director General will focus on the implementation of the recently approved new strategy, as well as the supervising of nuclear facilities that are in operation, under construction, or in the planning stages.
 
Tiippana has worked at STUK from 1997 and since 2009, he has served as director and as head of STUK's Nuclear Reactor Regulation department.
 
Tiippana has much experience in international cooperation.
 
He has also worked at the United States Nuclear Regulatory Commission in the early 2000s.
 
The position of STUK's Director General fell vacant when Director-General Tero Varjoranta was named Deputy Director General for Safeguards at the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).
