Photo - Lehtikuva Finland capital Helsinki has been ranked eighth in the list of liveable cities in the world and second among the cities in Europe as per the Global Livability Survey of the British newspaper the Economist.
The intelligence research department conducted the survey where Australian city Melbourne ranked top for the third consecutive year, reported the Economist and CNN on Thursday.
The top cities ranking for the year 2013, however, remained almost similar to the previous year where seven cities of Australia and Canada took position in the top 10.
Only Vienna of Austria and Helsinki of Finland are the European cities which secured position in the top 10 livable cities list where Vienna ranked second followed by Vancouver , Toronto, Calgary of Canada, Adelaide and Sydney of Australia, Helsinki of Finland, Perth of Australia and Auckland of New Zealand.
Melbourne got 97.5 to secure the first place while Helsinki got 96 points, said the report.
The report, however, said that ranking of 28 cities degraded due to civil unrest, with the Arab Spring, European austerity and Chinese discontent all contributing.
Damascus took place at the bottom in the list of 140 cities due to ongoing conflicting situation in Syria.
The ranking has been measured based on five categories: stability, healthcare, culture and environment, education and infrastructure. Scores in each category and sub-category are compiled and weighted to give a total out of 100, said the CNN report.
