The Russian Immigration Authority on Friday refused a Finnish lawyer to enter into the country despite having a valid visa and sent him back to Finland on Saturday after detaining him in a locked room there.

The lawyer, Kari Silvennoinen, who wrote the book “Soviet War Crimes Against Finland” criticizing the role of the then Soviet Union, was stopped at Moscow airport in Russia without showing any ground.

“My visa was OK and there was no legal ground to stop me,” Silvennoinen told STT.

Finland foreign ministry and Finnish mission in Moscow were informed about the matter but they did not make any comment in this regard.

The immigration authority, however, did not interrogate Silvennoinen at the immigration booth or during the detention, said the lawyer.

“I faced difficulties to communicate with the authorities properly due to language barrier,” said Silvennoinen , adding that he sensed his activities to investigate human rights

issue might have been the reason behind the refusal of his entry to Russia where criticism against state law is not allowed.
