Majority of the people believe that the existing rule of compulsory military training for every citizen is necessary and the provision should remain unchanged, according to the results of a recent opinion poll.

A Finnish language newspaper Suomen Kuvalehti conducted the poll during September where about 80 percent of the respondents spoke in favour of the existing rule for mandatory military training.

Half of the people think that the system should be upheld bringing necessary reforms through upgradation of the system while 21 percent opined in favour of shortening the service period from the existing duration of six months, nine months and one year, said the survey report.

About 19 per cent people, mostly youths, however, said  the training system should be applicable for selective group of people and the tenure of training should be for short term.

Of the respondents, the young people and the residents in the capital city supported changes in the system while the farmers, entrepreneurs and pensioners supported the existing system.

About 1,000 people were interviewed for the survey and the respondents were above 15 years, said the report.

The survey poll company Taloustutkimus conducted the survey and the margin of error is three percent to any direction.
