Finland is strongly committed to the development of the Common Security and Defence Policy.

Minister for Foreign Affairs, ErkkiTuomioja said this on Thursday while speaking about the development and strengthening of the European Union's Common Security and Defence Policy at a discussion.

The Ministry's Unit for Policy Planning and Research and the Finnish Institute of International Affairs organised the discussion on "The Future of European Security and Defence",  according to a press release of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

In his speech, Tuomioja stressed that Finland will continue its active commitment to the development of the European Union's Common Security and Defence Policy.

Besides Tuomioja, the event was attended by Vice-Minister Andrius Krivas of Lithuania, Director Antonio Missiroli of the European Union Institute for Security Studies (EUISS), and Director Teija Tiilikainen of the Finnish Institute of International Affairs.

Finland has participated in almost all of the EU's military and civilian crisis management operations. This reflects the important role of international crisis management in Finland's foreign policy.

Finland's goal is to develop the EU's Common Security and Defence Policy in a more comprehensive direction. The opportunities and effectiveness created by the policy will have to be utilized to the full in the future, said the release.

In Finland's view, the strategy of the EU's foreign and security policy must, therefore, be made more systematic.
