Four people including three students of Myllytulli vocational school in Oulu were wounded when a student attacked them with sharp weapons on Thursday.

Police said that the incident took place when a youth entered the school and attacked a male student, two female students and a female official indiscriminately.

The victims, all bellow 20 years old, sustained serious wounds in their chests and were taken to hospital immediately, school and police sources said.

Police arrested the 16-year-old boy, a student of the same school on charge of the incident.

The Assistant Police Chief of Oulu, Arto Karnaranta said that the students were stabbed in the canteen of the school while the janitor came under attack in the lobby of the canteen.

“The young man entered into the school with the weapon and committed the attacks deliberately,” Karnaranta said, adding that the attacker did it deliberately and he somewhat planned it.

The Assistant police chief said that he brought two blades along with him, although it is not sure whether he used both the weapons.

“The suspected admitted the responsibility of the attacks but the motive of the incident is yet to be known,” said Karnaranta.

The police is investigating the case as four attempted murders, said police.

Director of the institute Jarmo Paloniemi said that the suspect had acted calmly before the attack and his activities surprised everybody.

Meanwhile, Interior Minister Päivi Räsänen expressed profound shock at the incident and expressed empathy to the victims and their families, said an official press release.

"It is now important that all authorities concentrate on efforts to help the victims and their families and friends," said the minister.

She, however, expressed her satisfaction over the arrest of the accused immediate after the incident.

However, the sense of security among students of the school and residents in the area has been badly shaken, said Räsänen, adding that action by the authorities and voluntary organizations would restore sense of security as quickly as possible.

"The Police is preparing a threat assessment tool which allows it to quickly get a mental health specialist's assessment of the actual threat represented by a specific person and his or her potential for violence. Based on the assessment, the person could, if necessary, be quickly referred for further treatment within the health care services. This procedure will begin through piloting at Helsinki and Oulu Police Departments," said Räsänen.
