Photo - Lehtikuva Finavia, the authority responsible for maintaining airport networks and the air navigation system in Finland said that the ongoing extension programme of the Helsinki-Vantaa airport will create employment opportunity for thousands of people.
Finavia already got EUR 200 million for the expansion project undertaken at a cost of total EUR 900 million expected to start next year and to be completed by the year 2020, said sources.
Under the project the Traffic Exchange of the airport will be developed through making more room for new wide-bodied aircrafts, passenger bridges and expansion of terminal facilities.
Up-gradation of the check-in, security screening, and travel goods transportation facilities will also be increased in the terminal 2, in addition to introducing direct rail communication between the airport and Helsinki centre.
Finavia sources said that the Helsinki-Vantaa airport is the only profitable airport of the country which deals with on an average 10 million to 15 million passengers annually.
Most of the airports are incurring loss while the Oulu airport, which deals with about one million passengers every year, is on the margin.
Earlier, Finavia said that the medium-size airports of the country are not commercially viable due to the high labour cost.
