One in every ten prisoners is involved in different academic curricula inside the prisons of the country, according to the statistics of Criminal Investigation Agency.

The information was revealed at the programme on Tuesday, which said that the opportunity for getting education inside the jail varied in different jails.

Although the prisoners get opportunity to complete their school or college education in some jails, the opportunities are not available in all jails.

In some jails, prisoners however get the opportunity for vocational studies and various apprenticeship trainings.

“The opportunities for getting all kind of educations inside the jails are not available as like the normal society,” said a leading member of the agency, Kirsti Kuivajärvi, adding that one in every ten prisoners got the study facilities inside the jail last year.

The Research Institute of Legal Policy in Finland said that the education facilities inside the jail helps the authority to save money from its education budget, but only few people are getting the opportunity.

KRIS, the organization, which provides support to the released prisoners to rehabilitate in the society, observed that education inside jail is very important for the prisoners to return to a normal life after prison life.

“It is easier for them to return to normal civil life, if the prisoners get necessary academic education during imprisonment,” The president of KRIS, Timo Valkama told STT.
