Prime Minister Jyrki Katainen on Sunday expressed concerns over the financial crisis in the private journalism sector and offered dialogue with the owners of the media industry to find out a solution for coping with the situation.
Terming the ongoing trends of frequent job cuts in the private news industry as alarming, the premier said it would put a negative impact on the society.
“If the private news media sector falls, the real scenario of different sectors would not come to the people,” Katainen said while speaking at the PM’s question-hour programme in Yle Radio in the morning.
He said the private news media sector should stay alive to find out different opinions of various quarters on contemporary issues and events.
“The situation of private media worsened following decrease of advertisements,” said the prime minister, adding that the situation had been challenging for the traditional media following the digitalization of news media.
He said the country would fall behind other parts of the world if the media sector failed to continue its normal activities due to want of money.
“I hope the government will discuss the matter with the owners of news media companies,” the premier added.
