Defence Minister Carl Haglund on Monday said military alliances should not have any issue like “Sacred Cow” which could not be discussed openly.
Speaking at the opening ceremony of the defence course, he also said the country’s defence should run by its own way, whether it was in any military alliance or not.
The minister said the situation of the country’s defence was in a good shape, but put emphasis on in-depth discussion following the existing financial crisis.
“Attention should be paid to the fundamental pillars and the contents of defence forces from the national aspect,” said Haglund, adding that under the situation the authority was now looking for drawing the bigger picture regarding the needs and tasks of the defence force.
The minister also stressed for the necessity of having appropriate tools for detecting and preventing cyber threats.
Top defense Officials on the occasion. Photo - Lehtikuva. According to the minister's opinion, the development of tools and improvement of operational models were important to ensure the privacy of citizens and align it to what was not part of regulatory control.
Earlier on August 27, the President, Sauli Niinistö, also underscored the need for strong defence forces in Finland despite being a member of different common security organisations including NATO.
“We have to be attentive to our own defence forces, whether we are in any pack or union,” said Niinistö while addressing the three-day annual meeting of the heads of the diplomatic missions abroad in Helsinki.
