FTimes-STT Report, November 12

People from different strata protested the move of Tampere City Corporation for demolishing the century-old freight station in the city.

The people also demanded that the City Council should preserve the old building as a historic establishment. They submitted an application signed by 8,500 people to the authority in this regard.

The establishment was set up in 1907, which is also known as one of the places where fight took place during the civil war.

The demolition is intended to have a new railway yard street enabling passage of traffic beneath.

Among the people supporting the preservation of the old freight station who also have participated in signing of the petition include Ministers Paavo Arhinmäki and Merja Kyllonen, opera singer James Ryhänen, musician Dave Lindholm and Johanna Vuoksenmaa.
