A minor boy and a foreign national drowned in separate accidents at Lappeenranta and South Karelia Wednesday.
Police said the boy drowned in the Saimaa canal in Lappeenranta in the afternoon. The boy, who was rescued by a police patrol, died on the way to hospital, rescue department sources said.
Witnesses, however, said another child might have drowned in the canal, a claim that police snubbed out terming it rumour.
Meanwhile, in another incident at the Imatra area in South Karelia, a 42-year old sailor from Ghana drowned while taking off the ship’s rope from Vuoksi port. The man reportedly slipped and fell into the sea.
According to police, the man was lifted out of the water but cut not be saved. He was a non-resident ship personnel.
