The state postal authority is going to increase charges for the most common services from early next year, sources said.

Itella authorities said the number of mail handled by the postal service has gone down significantly in recent times, prompting the decision for charge hike so that the services remain viable commercially.

The increased use of electronic mail resulted in the slide in popularity of postal mail services, sources said.

The charge for first class priority mail will be raised to €1 from the existing 85 cents while the price of second class  stamp will rise from 75 cents to 90 cents, said sources.

The fees for packet delivery services will be also hiked. The cost delivering packets weighing up to two kilograms will be fixed at €7.60, which is two cents higher than the existing price.
