President Sauli Niinistö on Sunday said he supported the cause of bringing an end to political appointment in various government offices.

In an interview with Alma Media, the president said: “We are on our way to ending fiefdom,” the president said pointing at the alleged irregularities by Merja Ailuksen, the CEO of pension scheme company Keva (Kuntien Eläkevakuutus).

The president stressed on paying attention to the “small issues” because together they had revealed a big thing.

Niinistö said the issue was not only related to their personal gains but also was a question of fairness.

Keva CEO Merja Ailuksen recently announced that she would resign by the end of this year following widespread controversies for over a month over her alleged irregularities.

The graft allegations against Ailuksen include deliberately undervaluing her housing company to evade tax and lack of transparency in the process through which she bought an expensive car.

She was also criticised for the €250,000 renovation works that was commissioned on her company housing.
