More than 30 police officials were aware that Russian President Vladimir Putin’s name had been included with suspected criminals in a list prepared by the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI).

Head of the investigation State Prosecutor Juha-MikkoHämäläinen on Monday told MTV that about 12 names were registered in the data mistakenly. He said they had been trying to find out the group that had been involved with the error.

He said none had so far been arrested in connection with the incident.

On September 10, the state prosecutor said names of more people, who were not really suspected of any crime but included mistakenly in the crime suspect list of the NBI, had been identified.

Hämäläinen said it came to the surface when the authority had started investigation to find out why the Russian president’s name appeared in the list in April.

Earlier, Vladimir Putin was named a crime suspect in a message sent from abroad to the NBI and was subsequently recorded as such by mistake.

Following the issue, the authorities started tracing the origin of the message, how it came to Finnish police and how the Russian president’s name ended up on the NBI suspect list.

After the incident, the NBI said inserting Putin’s name in the list was a mistake, which it regretted and said the name had already been removed from the list.

Immediately after hearing the news of the blunder, Interior Minister Räsänen took measures for probing into the matter.

National Police Commissioner Mikko Paatero also termed the affair a gross mistake.
